With a high end equipment rental business that’s split 50/50 between postproduction houses and music recording studios, Los Angeles-based World Link Digital is in a unique position to spot cross-industry trends. According to company founder and president, Dave Rosen, TC’s System 6000 is proving to be a hit in both worlds.
“We put in our order after seeing the System 6000 at last year’s AES show,” says Rosen. “We had demos of other competing products, but after seeing the excitement among our clients about the 6000, we purchased it first. Now we have three and we plan to purchase a fourth.”
In business for eight years, World Link Digital began as a Pro Tools rental company, starting out with just one system. Today the company maintains an inventory of about 45 different configurations of Pro Tools, and also offers to its customers synchronizers, digital dubbers, consoles, video recording and digital storage and archiving, as well the best in both new and vintage microphones and outboard equipment.
“We build complete systems customized to the client’s needs,” explains Rosen. “We supply whatever is requested, no matter how esoteric. Client service is really what we’re all about. That’s one reason why we’re so happy with our relationship with TC Electronic. They supply the kind of customer service to us that we provide to our own customers.”
“In the postproduction world, where most of my System 6000 rentals have been so far,” he notes, “what’s really turning people on is the fact that the you can call up different scenes via time code. Recently we’ve had film mixers on Warner Bros.’ Osmosis Jones using two System 6000s — one each for dialog and effects. They needed them to match, and that’s very simple with the 6000 because you can load all your presets into one, save it to floppy disk, walk over and plug that disk into another unit. It’s incredibly easy to work in that style. Plus, you can save your settings, go away for a month, come back, put the disk in, and have all your effects come right up.”
“Several people have told us that, having used it on a show, they now don’t want to work without it. And of course, sonically, I’ve gotten nothing but good feedback. We find that anybody who tries the System 6000 walks away incredibly excited about it. It’s my guess that it won’t be long before every stage in town will have them,” Dave Rosen concludes.
